Original Explanation

This is a classic brain teaser problem. In order to solve this puzzle, the farmer must complete the following steps:

  1. Take the chicken and drop it off on the other side of the river.
  2. Return back and this time collect the fox.
  3. Travel across the river and drop off the fox. Pick up the chicken that was left in step 1 and return back.
  4. Drop off the chicken and pick up the grain. Take the grain to the other side of the river.
  5. Return to pick up chicken.
